The new variety SRA1 which was to be released this spring will be held back so that the industry can see its milling capability. It is a low fibre cane so the industry needs to know whether it will go through the rollers and not cause any major problems.
The first lot of SRA1 to be crushed will be at the beginning of August and the next lot will be crushed in October.
This is not just the Isis Central Mills concern the whole sugar industry will be looking at this trial.
Geoff Kent from QUT is involved in the trial along with SRA plant breeders.
